Asthma is a lung disease caused by narrowing of the airways (breathing tubes) in the lungs that is partially or completely reversible. The airways narrowing can be caused by variety of stimuli such as viral infections, allergens, exercise, medicines, or environmental conditions such as cold air. Symptoms of asthma include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. These symptoms tend to come and go, and are related to the degree of airway narrowing in the lungs. Asthma can usually be treated successfully with medications and avoidance of triggers.
